On Monday, August 19th, the HSP Cougars Football team took the field after school wearing a new accessory, Guardian Caps.

Thanks to contributions from parents in the program led by Ken Hazen and Vern Vincent, the Guardian Caps were ordered, delivered, and installed in an effort to reduce the impact of helmet to helment contact and keep our young men safer on the practice field.

Below are statements and a list of facts pulled form the Guardian Cap website:

"The Guardian Cap is a product of a company that has long been in the business of innovation and has been working to create impact reduction technologies.  The Guardian is a giant step forward in innovation of sports equipment.  The Guardian brings a soft-shell layer to the outside of the decades old hard-shell football helmets and reduces the impact the head takes in a hit up to 33%."

What is the Guardian Cap?
  • Soft-shell football helmet cover
  • Reduces impact up to 33%
  • One-size fits all
  • Lightweight (<7oz)
  • Waterproof; will not absorb water
  • Insulates in hot & cold weather
  • Permitted for high school practice and games by the National Federation of State High School Association (NFHS).
  • Scientifically tested on the field and in the lab.
  • It is important to remember that no helmet or practice apparatus is able to reduce or prevent concussions. Guardian Caps reduce the force of impact by 33%.

We will practice with our Guardian Caps daily at HSP.  While the new look is not exactly stylish according to our players, they are having fun coming up with nick names for our new protective gear.  Some even say that we resemble characters from the Mel Brooks comedy Spaceballs.  What do you think?
